Crazy Clouds - Bassui - Ask your question

The Reading:

"When you decide to come here, you do so by yourself.  When you want to ask a question, you do it by yourself.  You do not depend on another nor do you use the teachings of the Buddha... Clever worldy statements, the written word, reason and duty, discrimination and understanding, cannot reach this Zen."
-Bassui, Crazy Clouds, p57

The more a student takes on questions that are farther from him, rather than person, the less we find a meaningful context for Zen talk.  Why else did Ummon use the staff he was carrying?
