Ummon - How to Free the Buddhas

The Reading:

One day Ummon ascended the rostrum and said, "Vasubandhu happened to transform himself into a staff of chestnut wood, and, striking the earth once, all the innumerable Buddhas were released from their entangling words."  So saying he descended from the pulpit.

Discussion:

There are no words and sentences in Zen, and so everything we say is poison.  Everything the Buddhas have said is likewise poison.  It entangles and confuses.  It is a good thing there is no karma!  What troublemakers all these Zen Masters are!
