Master Fuke

The Reading:

Fuke... used to roam about in the streets ringing a bell and crying out: When it comes in brightness, I hit the brightness.  When it comes in darkness, I hit the darkness.  When it comes from all directions, I hit like a whirlwind, and when it comes out of the blue, I flail it."

Hearing this, Rinzai instructed one of his monks to grab Fuke and demand, "If it does not come in any of these ways, what then?"

The monk sought out Fuke and did as he was bid.  But Fuke only wriggled out of his grasp and said, "Tomorrow there is a nice free lunch at the Monastery of Great Compassion."

Discussion:

If only Rinzai had listened!
