On Good and Evil, Patriarch Style

The Reading:

When you see good and evil in this world, do not cling to them, nor shun them, nor be defiled by them.
-Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch, Studies in Zen, D.T. Suzuki, p31

Discussion:

Many Buddhists and some who call themselves Zen Buddhists talk of compassion and doing good in the world.

Where does these desires rise from?  From attachment to good and evil.
